Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced Hafidh’s death, saying he died at around 8 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

Hafidh became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021 when President Samia assumed office following the death of President John Magufuli. He largely maintained a private life away from the political spotlight while supporting his wife during her tenure as head of state.

President Samia and Hafidh married in 1978 and had four children. Their family largely maintained a low public profile despite Samia’s prominent position in Tanzanian politics.

Hafidh was also known for his background in agriculture and largely stayed out of the political spotlight during his wife’s presidency.

News of his death has prompted messages of condolence from political leaders across Tanzania and the wider East African region.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania, describing Hafidh’s death as a painful loss.

Other regional leaders have also conveyed condolences as Tanzania begins a period of mourning following the death of the First Gentleman.

Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, the family’s native area, according to Vice President Ndejembi.

Hafidh’s death marks a deeply personal loss for President Samia, who has continued to serve as Tanzania’s head of state while keeping her family life largely away from public attention.

Tanzania is now preparing to bid farewell to the country’s first First Gentleman as family members, government officials and citizens mourn his passing.
