The CD Tenerife striker died in hospital a day after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a league match.
Spanish football has been plunged into mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who passed away aged 30 after an on-field collision during a Segunda División match against FC Andorra.
De Miguel died at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, a day after the incident at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium in Tenerife.
The collision occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time, with the match tied at 2-2. FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono had rushed out of his area to challenge De Miguel for a long ball when his knee struck the forward in the chest.
De Miguel collapsed and received emergency medical attention on the pitch. He was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering a cardiac arrest, with medical personnel managing to restore his pulse during the emergency response.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit, where his condition was initially described as stable despite the seriousness of his injuries. However, his neurological condition deteriorated overnight, and Tenerife confirmed his death the following morning.
The match was abandoned following the incident, while Owono was shown a straight red card.
The tragedy has also deeply affected Owono, who has faced intense scrutiny and online abuse following the incident.
In a statement released through FC Andorra, the goalkeeper expressed profound grief, describing the period as among the most difficult days of his life and extending his condolences to De Miguel’s family.
Owono subsequently deactivated his Instagram account after receiving abusive messages, with some users directing accusations at him over the forward’s death.
His teammate Lautaro Spatz came to his defence, saying Owono had no intention of causing harm and was deeply affected by what had happened.
FC Andorra has confirmed that it is providing psychological support to players, technical staff and other members of the club affected by the tragedy.
Tributes have continued to pour in from clubs, players and football governing bodies across Europe.
