Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has appealed to former Kakamega Governor and current Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya to support his presidential ambitions as the Linda Mwananchi movement intensifies its grassroots mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the movement's tour of Sabatia in Kakamega County, Sifuna described Oparanya as a political elder who played an important role in nurturing his political career. He asked the former governor to give him his vote and blessing as he seeks to mount a presidential campaign.

Sifuna acknowledged that Oparanya may not necessarily agree with his political decision but urged him to nevertheless support his ambition. He said he was not seeking financial assistance from the Cabinet Secretary, but rather his goodwill, guidance and political backing.

The appeal comes as Linda Mwananchi continues to expand its grassroots activities across Western Kenya, with Sifuna and other leaders engaging residents in markets and public gatherings as they seek to build support for the movement.

Sifuna's presidential ambitions come amid significant political realignments across Western Kenya. Having previously served as Kakamega Governor, Oparanya remains an influential political figure in the region, with a long history in national and local politics.

The movement's campaign has also received backing from leaders including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who have publicly supported Sifuna's push for the presidency. Natembeya has argued that the Luhya community should seek the presidency rather than settle for the deputy presidency.

Sifuna's appeal to Oparanya comes at a time when Western Kenya is emerging as a major political battleground ahead of the 2027 elections. Competing political formations are seeking to consolidate support in the region, with established leaders and emerging movements positioning themselves for greater influence.
