The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has rebranded as the Ukombozi Alliance, marking a new phase in the opposition coalition’s efforts to reorganise ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the change on Monday, September 21, saying the decision had been unanimously agreed upon by parties within the coalition.

“After today, even this podium will change because the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has this day, September 21, 2026, unanimously agreed to rebrand and change the name to Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo said.

The new alliance will operate under the slogan “One Term, One Team, One Coalition” and has adopted blue and white as its signature colours. Kalonzo said the coalition would undertake the necessary steps to formalise the rebranding and communicate the changes to the relevant authorities.

Kalonzo initially announced that former President Uhuru Kenyatta would chair the new alliance and convene a Jubilee Party meeting to facilitate decisions relating to the transition. However, later on Monday, reports emerged that Siaya Governor James Orengo had taken over as chairman of the Ukombozi Alliance Coalition Council following a meeting of the coalition’s leadership.

The leadership changes come against the backdrop of a recent High Court decision concerning the political roles of retired presidents. Uhuru has agreed to relinquish his position as Jubilee Party leader following the ruling, while the court decision does not bar a former president from participating in political activities.

The rebranding follows months of consultations within opposition circles over the restructuring of Azimio and efforts to broaden engagement with other political formations. Kalonzo said the alliance would seek to address divisions within the opposition as it works towards a broader political arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kalonzo also said the alliance would seek to address divisions surrounding the Linda Mwananchi name dispute at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties as opposition leaders continue discussions on their respective political vehicles.

The emergence of the Ukombozi Alliance adds another layer to the ongoing realignment of Kenya’s opposition landscape, with parties and political leaders continuing to negotiate structures and partnerships ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The coalition is now expected to undertake further organisational and administrative steps to give effect to the rebranding and clarify its leadership and structure as preparations for the elections continue.
